Ryan Gosling is officially entering the Star Wars universe, and the casting feels like a surprisingly natural next step for the actor. Gosling will star as Kade Auberon in Star Wars: Starfighter, giving him a leading role in one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises while introducing audiences to a completely new corner of the galaxy.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Starfighter takes place five years after The Rise of Skywalker and moves away from the Skywalker family to tell an original story. Gosling will lead a cast that includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Amy Adams, and Aaron Pierre, with the film scheduled to arrive in theaters in May 2027.
Ryan Gosling Is On a Roll
The casting comes at an interesting point in Gosling’s career. After years of establishing himself as a serious dramatic actor, he has recently shown just how comfortable he is moving between completely different genres.
His performance as Ken in Barbie earned him an Academy Award nomination and became one of the most talked-about parts of the movie. He followed that with The Fall Guy, where he combined action, comedy, and romance as stuntman Colt Seavers.
Then came Project Hail Mary, bringing Gosling back into science fiction as scientist Ryland Grace. The film once again put him at the center of a massive space adventure, requiring him to carry both the emotional and comedic sides of the story.
He is also set to play Ghost Rider for Marvel Studios, adding another major franchise character to his growing list of upcoming roles.
Why Gosling Fits Kade Auberon
Gosling’s appeal goes beyond his ability to carry a blockbuster. One of his biggest strengths is how naturally he can make restrained characters compelling. He rarely needs to overplay a scene to command attention. Whether he is playing a stuntman, scientist, comedian, or emotionally complicated dramatic character, Gosling tends to give his performances a sense of personality without making them feel excessive.
That could make him an especially strong choice for Kade Auberon.
The character is a pilot whose life becomes connected to a young boy and a powerful starfighter, placing him at the center of an adventure that appears to combine large-scale action with a more personal story. Gosling has already demonstrated that he can make audiences invest in characters while the spectacle happens around them.
A New Direction for Star Wars
The most interesting part of Starfighter may be that it is not trying to repeat what came before. The film is introducing a new protagonist, a new conflict, and a new period in the Star Wars timeline. That gives Gosling room to create a character without being overshadowed by decades of existing storylines.
After Barbie, The Fall Guy, and Project Hail Mary, Gosling has shown that he can move between wildly different roles without losing what makes him compelling. Kade Auberon could be another opportunity to prove it. For Starfighter, casting Gosling is not simply about putting a famous actor in a famous franchise. It could be the decision that gives this new chapter its identity.
