Hayden Panettiere, the actress who became a familiar face to television audiences through Heroes and Nashville, has died at 36. Her death was confirmed by her representative on August 17, with her father, Skip Panettiere, remembering his daughter as “a force of nature.” Authorities are investigating her death, but a cause has not been publicly confirmed. A preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.
A Career That Started in Childhood
Panettiere entered the entertainment industry before she was even a year old, appearing in commercials before moving into television. She eventually appeared on soap operas including One Life to Live and Guiding Light, establishing herself as a young performer long before her biggest roles arrived.
Her early film career included A Bug’s Life, in which she voiced Princess Dot, followed by Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, Racing Stripes, and Bring It On: All or Nothing. Her performance in Remember the Titans earned her a Young Artist Award, while her work on A Bug’s Life earned her a Grammy nomination for the film’s read-along album.
Becoming a Television Star
Panettiere became a household name in 2006 when she was cast as Claire Bennet on NBC’s Heroes. Her character, a high school cheerleader with the ability to regenerate, became one of the show’s defining figures. Panettiere won a Saturn Award and a Teen Choice Award for her work on the series, along with additional nominations. She also received the Genesis Award for her advocacy work surrounding animal protection.
Her next major role showed just how much she could stretch beyond the superhero genre. In Nashville, Panettiere played Juliette Barnes, a talented but troubled country singer. The role earned her two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress in 2013 and 2014. She also received nominations from the Critics' Choice Television Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and Satellite Awards.
From Horror to Her Final Years
Panettiere became a fan favorite in the Scream franchise, playing Kirby Reed in Scream 4 before returning to the role in Scream VI more than a decade later. Her performance helped make Kirby one of the franchise’s most memorable characters.
Beyond acting, Panettiere also established herself as a singer through Nashville, performing songs for the series and contributing to its musical success. Her voice became an important part of Juliette Barnes’ character and allowed Panettiere to showcase another side of her talent.
In 2026, Panettiere released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, offering a deeply personal look at addiction, postpartum depression, motherhood, and the difficult experiences she faced throughout her life.
Panettiere’s career was ultimately defined by its range. She was a child performer, superhero, country singer, horror heroine and award-nominated actress. At just 36, her death marks the sudden end of a career that had already spanned more than three decades, but the characters she brought to life remain part of the television and film landscape she helped shape.
