Top 5 favorite actresses/actors?
Denzel Washington, Marisa Tomei, Mahershala Ali, Angelina Jolie, Christian Bale and Regina King. 5 is impossible!
You play the role of Maddi Brewer in the new drama series The Kings of Napa on the OWN Network. Can you share a little about your character with us?
Maddi is the friend we all need! Outspoken, hilarious, playful, loyal, fashionable, and she always tells it like it is. What I love about Maddi is her unabashed appetite for life. She really goes after her goals and believes in “having it all!” She's well-educated (She’s got her own practice as an OB-GYN), an “independent woman” you could say, who still believes in love. Her zest for life is contagious and was so fun to embody! You can bet on Maddi having a great time while she’s looking for a man who is her equal!!
You will also be starring in Apple TV’s new sci-fi anthology series “Zone” What do you think will surprise people about this show?
I am geeked to be on an Apple TV show because I absolutely love their content. I think the show will have a different name when it comes out but it’s being touted as “a cross between Stranger Things and Black Mirror”. What I hope will resonate most with people, and what resonated most with me, is that even in a future where tech plays a much more significant and culture-altering part of our lives, there are themes that connect all human beings: love, family, and the power of forgiveness.
What can fans expect from Samora Smallwood in 2022?
Fans can expect me to continue to embody the #ManifestYoShit mantra! Going after my dreams, believing in myself and empowering others to do the same. Lots of exciting projects are on the horizon, more from Kings of Napa, and I’m currently developing my own series called “GONE,” a crime thriller. I’m so thankful to be following my purpose and I truly believe that with faith, vision, and hard work, we’re all capable of fulfilling our wildest dreams.
What was it like starring in the recent Lifetime thriller Death she wrote?
“Death She Wrote” was a transformational experience. It was my first time as #1 on the call sheet, and that means the story is all about you and your character’s journey. That was thrilling and a challenge I was so ready for. I’m extremely grateful to our director Sharon Lewis, and the folks at Champlain Media and Lifetime, for giving me the opportunity.
If you weren’t in the entertainment industry, what could you see yourself doing?
My two greatest passions are storytelling and activism, specifically empowering traditionally marginalized voices and challenging harmful narratives about women and black people. Empowering myself means helping and healing and I feel called to do that for others as well. I know my future as a creator and a storyteller will undoubtedly involve amplifying and empowering women and BIPOC stories, changing the narratives about what we think we know, and entertaining while doing it. We are all collectively going through a tough time, and while there is much progress still needed, I’m hopeful because culturally for women and people of colour, and the LGBTQ+ community, we are seeing a shift in how our experiences are understood.
Recently you’ve lent your voice in Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6, can fans expect more voice work from you?
Yes!! I can’t say much right now, but definitely, 100%. What a great experience. Big, huge thank you to Kim Hurdon! Casting for such a wonderful opportunity and also to dialect coach, Carlos Diaz for the very specific work we did for that role. Carlos also helped me with my character work for my role on the Apple TV+ project as well.
