Marvin Sapp Shares Take On Reaching Icon Status In Today's Music

Written by Ty Cole @tycoletv

As we celebrate our music icons with awards and musical celebrations, will we have any icons to celebrate in the future? The Black Music Honors are back this year, honoring the legendary African American artists who have influenced and made significant musical contributions to African American culture and American music worldwide.

Once again, The Real's host, Loni Love is set to return as our host for the ceremony with legends like Ginuwine, Marvin Sapp, Angie Stone, and Ramsey Lewis to be honored for their contributions to music. This year, we will have performances by Cece Winans, Jacquees, After 7, Chrisette Michele, and much more.

Your Voice Magazine correspondent, Ty Cole spoke to Sapp and Stone to see if they think any of today's talent will ever reach icon status and their answers may surprise you.

Sapp shares that he doesn't know if anyone can "reach" that iconic level. The 2x BET Award recipient continues to share his point, stating today's artists continue to try to "beat out" the previous records they have done before. Sapp continues to share that he would never beat out his hit record 'Never Would Have Made It', which went on to become certified platinum by the RIAA.

Stone, 2x Soul Train Lady Of Soul recipient, shares her take on an icon, "An icon is someone who has been "given an assignment" that's following through religiously and representing the culture".

Whether you are an icon or not, make sure to check your local listings to watch the 2021 Black Music Honors celebration. Check out the promotional video below.
