Mahalia's Jason Dirden On How He Accepted His Purpose: I Was Blessed To Never Be Discouraged

Gospel Blues icon Mahalia Jackson is one of the most influential voices to ever grace the 20th century, with memorable hit songs like Movin on Up A Little Higher and His Eye Is On the Sparrow, which earned the 'Fish & Bread singer' her induction to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. For those who may or may not be familiar with the gospel blues powerhouse, Lifetime is bringing her legacy to the TV screen with Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia, with Orange is The New Black alum Danielle Brooks, playing the titular character.

In the film, we see Mahalia Jackson struggle with pursuing her dreams, with people in her path continuing to dim her light and shift her focus from her true purpose. Our correspondent Ty Cole was able to speak with the cast of the film, where Jason Dirden , who plays music-loving reverend and Mahalia's future husband Russell Roberts, shares how was "blessed to never be discouraged" from the gift that God gave him

Lifetime's highly anticipated gospel biopic Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia, will premiere Saturday, April 3 at 8:00pm ET/PT.
