“Three months have passed--...” wrote Beyoncé in her letter demanding justice for the murder of Breonna Taylor. Yesterday, the Houston artist sent her letter to Attorney General Daniel Cameron of Kentucky and published it to her website.
Beyoncé, like many of us, is fed up with the inaction displayed after another innocent Black life has been taken by the hands of the police. She emphasizes repeatedly that it has been 3 months since Breonna Taylor’s death and no action has been taken. No arrests have been made and no officers have even been fired.
In the case of Breonna Taylor, 3 officers in plain clothes broke into her apartment where her and boyfriend were asleep in the middle of the night in an attempted drug raid. Breonna’s boyfriend, who was licensed to carry, fired at the officers thinking intruders had broken into their home. The officers fired back, fatally shooting Breonna about 8 times.
The main suspect in the drug case had been arrested prior to the break-in and no drugs were found in Breonna’s apartment, yet no charges have been brought against the officers involved. Earlier this month, the Louisville, Kentucky metro council voted to pass “Breonna’s Law” which bans no-knock search warrants and requires the use of a body cam for searches- but many can agree that this isn’t enough.
Beyoncé urges AG Cameron to charge the officers involved, commit to transparency throughout the investigation and to investigate the Louisville Metro Police Department’s, “...response to Breonna Taylor’s murder, as well as the pervasive practices that result in the repeated deaths of unarmed Black citizens.”
According to CNN, the attorney’s office is aware of the letter but has made no comment.
